What
is Pilates?
Joseph Hubertus Pilates originally created 34 matwork exercises which he called
Contrology. This was after 20 years of his personal study of human anatomy
and movement patterns, as well as those of animals.
Joseph also spent his life studying a myriad of physical disciplines, from
Yoga to the Greek & Roman physical regimens, as well as his personal sport
of boxing.
In the 1920’s, while working with wounded soldiers (during WWI Joseph
was placed under forced internment in England, as a German National) Joseph
rigged their beds with springs and cords in order to assist them while they
performed his physical fitness routine, Contrology.
It was from here that the first equipment, the Reformer bed was born. Today
there are over 500 exercises that can be performed either on the floor or
on one of the various pieces of Pilates equipment.
